Jyoti Basu, an Indian Marxist theorist, was a leader of the Communist movement in India.
He was the longest serving Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1977 to 2000 and a founding member of the Communist Party of India.
A member of the Politburo of the party, he was also a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly 11 times.
At the time of his resignation, he was the longest serving chief minister in India and considered for the post of Prime Minister of India four times.
Jyoti Basu, born to a middle-class Bengali family in Calcutta, British India, had a doctor father and a housewife mother from Barudi in the Dhaka District of the Bengal Presidency.
He was the youngest of three siblings, had an affectionate nickname, and was raised in an Indian style family.
Nilinkanta, a judge in the High Court, had ancestral lands in Barudi which were turned into a library after his death.
His education began at the Loreto School Kindergarten in Calcutta where his name was shortened to Jyoti during admission.
Later he moved to St. Xaviers, completed his education in 1932, and pursued Law at University College, London, becoming a barrister on January 26, 1940.
Jyoti Basu returned to India before receiving his qualification.
