There, he overheard a conspiracy by enemy kings Ripudamana and Singhaditya, who planned to attack Ujjain with the help of a demon named Dushanan. Just as the rival kings were about to conquer Ujjain, Lord Shiva appeared in his Mahakal form and saved the city. Since then, it is believed that Lord Shiva has resided in the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain in the form of a linga, as a testament to his devotees' faith.
Also, it is believed as per Hindu mythology that Lord Shiva manifested himself in the form of a unique lingam (phallic symbol) at this very spot in Ujjain. The "Swayambhu Lingam," which is considered to be self-manifested, is worshipped as Mahakaleshwar, the Lord of Time.
